Torn Meniscus: Causes, Symptoms, and Treatment Options

Torn Meniscus: Causes, Symptoms, and Treatment Options

A torn meniscus, a common knee injury, occurs when the rubbery cartilage cushioning the knee joint tears. This cartilage acts as a shock absorber between the thigh bone (femur) and shinbone (tibia). Each knee possesses two menisci, and tears can result from sudden trauma, such as twisting the knee during sports, or from gradual degeneration due to aging and wear and tear. Repetitive stress from activities like frequent squatting or kneeling can also contribute. Previous knee injuries increase the risk. Symptoms include pain (often on the inner or outer knee), swelling, stiffness, clicking or locking of the knee, and a feeling of instability. Diagnosis involves a physical exam and imaging tests like X-rays or MRIs. Treatment options range from non-surgical approaches like physical therapy, NSAIDs, or cortisone injections to surgical repair, depending on the severity and location of the tear. Risk factors include aging, excess weight, poor conditioning, high-impact activities, and family history of joint problems. Preventing future tears involves low-impact exercise, knee-strengthening exercises, maintaining a healthy weight, using proper technique during physical activity, and warming up before exercise. Early diagnosis is crucial for effective treatment and preventing long-term damage.
