Rapid Blood Test: NHS Targets Child Sepsis & Meningitis Diagnosis
The NHS is currently trialling an innovative 15-minute blood test designed to rapidly diagnose potentially life-threatening conditions in children, significantly faster than conventional methods. This cutting-edge “lab-on-chip” technology can quickly differentiate between bacterial and viral infections, which typically takes days with traditional tests. This accelerated diagnosis is crucial for serious illnesses such as sepsis, meningitis, and Kawasaki disease, where early intervention is paramount to patient survival and preventing long-term complications. By identifying the specific type of infection, clinicians can administer appropriate, targeted treatments much sooner.
A key benefit of this rapid diagnostic tool is its potential to drastically improve patient outcomes. For conditions like sepsis, where every hour of delayed treatment increases mortality risk, a 15-minute diagnosis can be a true game-changer, saving lives and preventing lifelong harm. Furthermore, the test addresses the critical issue of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) by helping to avoid unnecessary antibiotic prescriptions for viral infections. This precise identification ensures that antibiotics are only used when genuinely required, contributing to the responsible stewardship of these vital medicines.
The trial, set to run this winter (2025/2026), involves thousands of children across ten leading NHS hospitals, including Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children, St Mary’s Hospital in London, and Alder Hey Children’s Hospital in Liverpool. If successful, the NHS plans a nationwide rollout, revolutionising paediatric care across the country. Beyond direct medical benefits, the test is expected to reduce hospital stays, alleviate anxiety for parents, and enhance overall NHS efficiency by optimising resource allocation.
